Soundscape Soul: Josh and Matt

Josh Springer - Vocals

26, and a native of New York City, Josh Springer has been singing his style of Acoustic Goodness for just about 4 years now, but has been singing for over a decade. He has taken his skills as a Singer/Lyricist and teamed up with his great friend and guitarist, Matt Aronson. Together, the two create a brand of music so fresh, some have even called it "Surreal".

Josh's vision of becoming a performer started when he was a Senior in High School back in 1999. Singing for his school's choir, he was offered a chance to audition with Sugar Beats Entertainment in Manhattan. The company was looking to put together a boyband to compete with rising groups, such as *NSYNC and Backstreet Boys. Making it to the final 7 out of over 5,000 New York City Teens, Josh was let go in the final stages of the audition. Despite the setback at a young age, this was all the motivation he needed to pursue his dream of performing.

Attending college at SUNY Oneonta in Upstate New York, Josh majored in Music Performance and concentrated on Vocal Skills. He gained tons of experience while perticipating in the school's various performing ensembles, including an R&B Band. It was in college where Josh geared away from the Pop genre that he encountered in High School, and began to embrace a combination of R&B, Folk, and what some people call the Singer/Songwriter Genre.

Josh has since joined the ranks of the Independent Artists and continues writing with Matt Aronson.

Matt Aronson - Guitar/Vocals

26, and a native of Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, Matt began playing guitar at the age of 13 after lying to his middle school music teacher about being a guitar player. He figured it was important to make this fantasy a bit of a reality. As soon as he picked it up, he was hooked. He began the process of teaching himself, learning from books and friends, as well as instructional videos like many self taught players.

Matt joined up with several High School friends and formed a band called 'Roof Garden'. The group was heavily focused on improvisation and spent hours in each other's basements playing completely improvised pieces. 'Roof Garden' never went very far, but the value of those years in terms of Aronson's guitar education was priceless. He learned a great deal about musicianship as well as group dynamics in those basement jams.

Later on he got into Blues and Jazz as well as funk and R&B music and ended up starting his college years at Berklee College of Music. Matt left Berklee soon after entering and went on to school in Putney, Vermont. He also formed a Jazz Trio called 'Apollo 50' with Touch Guitarist, Thom Catts, and Drummer, Jim Aguzzi. The group played several gigs but ultimately stopped playing together after various band members moved out of town.

In the sumer of 2004, Matt worked at a Summer Camp as a music specialist where he met Josh Springer. The two hit it off instantly on both a personal and musical level. They began writing and playing together and by the end of the summer already had a few rough recordings. The two have played and written together since and the sound has matured. The writing has taken on a distinct character and the two songwriters have an Album release and a wide range of original songs to show for it.
